\nPhotos are made up of pixels<\/a> (A.)
\nBecause photos are made of pixels, a photo can only be as big as it\u2019s original size.
\nPhoto formats can be used in print, web and animation.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

GIF<\/a><\/strong>
\n\u2022 One of the standard formats for online use
\n\u2022 Can have a transparent background, meaning it can float over any color without having a white box around it. Let\u2019s say the boy with birds image was a background for my website and I wanted to add my logo, I\u2019d use a gif (or png) so as not to get a white background around the bird. (B.)<\/p>\n

\u2022 Animation option. (C.) Animated GIFs<\/a> are like flipbooks; they use a sequence of images to create the illusion of movement. Often used as Twitter icons or as email signatures.<\/p>\n

\n\u2022 Very similar to a GIF, though it lacks the option for animation
\n\u2022 Can have a transparent background

TIFF<\/a><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Standard print format
\n\u2022 Sometimes compressed, but much less than the GIF, JPEG or PNG)
\n\u2022 Can have layers \u2013 so it can be easy to edit
\n\u2022 Can have a transparent background
\n\u2022 Visible in print
\n\u2022 Significantly larger in file size than JPEG and other formats<\/p>\n

PSD<\/a><\/strong>
\n\u2022 Photoshop native file
\n\u2022 No compression
\n\u2022 Can have layers \u2013 so it\u2019s easy to edit
\n\u2022 Can have a transparent background
\n\u2022 Visible in print<\/p>\n

Illustrations\/Vector Images<\/a>…<\/strong>
\nIllustrations are made up of points (D.)<\/p>\n

Because illustrations are made of points, a vector image can be any size, thus, it\u2019s the recommended format for branding marks and logos.
\nVector formats can be used in print and animation.<\/p>\n

\n\u2022 Illustrator native file

\n* Fully editable
\n* Visible in print<\/p>\n

EPS<\/a><\/strong>
\n\u2022\tEPSs can be created in photo and vector programs and can only be edited in the type of program they were created in.
\n\u2022\tVisible in print<\/p>\n

PDF<\/a><\/strong>
\n\u2022 PDFs can be created in multiple programs and editability depends on where it was created.
\n– If a file is created in a vector program, then it will only be editable in a vector program.
\n– If a file is created in a layout program it may not be easily editable in a vector program and it won\u2019t be editable in a photo program.
\n– If a file is created in a photo program, then it will only be editable in a photo program.
\n\u2022 The PDF format was created so that everyone can open them, thus it\u2019s the perfect format to send out to people when you\u2019re not sure what platform (Mac or PC) or email client (Entourage, Outlook, etc.) they use.<\/p>\n
